TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Luka Modric has verbally agreed to join AC Milan. The club’s sporting director, Igli Tare, confirmed the news following direct talks with the Croatian midfielder.
"I talked to him directly and saw a man who is genuinely eager to be competitive. His arrival is very important for a team in need of players like him, leadership," Tare told Gazzetta dello Sport.
Tare shared that during their meeting, Modric asked whether AC Milan would be built as a team capable of winning trophies.
"He has won six Champions League titles and wants to be a star player from the start," he said.
"He is important for what he will convey in terms of mentality, leadership, and professionalism. The fact that he is a fan of AC Milan makes this story even more interesting, and it would be great for him to have an extraordinary season because at the end of the season there is the World Cup," Tare added.
Modric and AC Milan have already reached an agreement on personal terms. Both parties reportedly shook hands in early June, just ahead of the Club World Cup. The contract will be signed after the tournament in the United States concludes.
The veteran midfielder is set to sign a one-year deal, with an option to extend for another season. According to ESPN, the agreement includes a net salary of approximately US$4 million per year, plus performance-based bonuses.
Modric, who will turn 40 in September, is in top physical condition and is aiming to feature in the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. After departing Real Madrid, where he spent 13 years and won 28 major trophies, he is seeking regular playing time.
In addition to Modric, AC Milan is also working to strengthen its squad by securing Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka, with personal terms reportedly agreed upon.
