TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Philippine Senate, acting as an impeachment court, on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, issued an official summons to Vice President Sara Duterte, as reported by ABS-CBN and Anadolu.
In the summons, Duterte is given a non-extendable 10-day deadline to respond to the complaint against her.
Senate President and presiding officer, Francis "Chiz" Escudero, announced the issuance of the summons after 18 out of 23 senate members voted to return the impeachment file to the House of Representatives. This was to clarify the legality of the impeachment process of Vice President Sara Duterte.
Sara Duterte, the daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte, was impeached on February 5 after more than two-thirds of the lower house of parliament (DPR) signed a petition to impeach her.
She was accused of misusing public funds while serving as the first secretary of Education in the Philippines.
The ousting petition arose amid escalating political conflict, where Sara Duterte accused President Ferdinand Marcos Jr of wanting her dead.
She claimed that Marcos saw her as the "biggest threat" to his reelection chances in 2028.
Marcos and Sara Duterte previously ran together as the presidential and vice presidential candidates in the 2022 election and succeeded in winning a six-year term.
However, their political alliance has now fractured. Sara Duterte resigned from Marcos' Cabinet last June, after previously serving as education secretary.
Furthermore, on February 12, Duterte was also charged by the state with incitement to sedition.
