TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has instructed his minister to resolve the issue of waste comprehensively before 2029 in accordance with the National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) 2025-2029.
Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said the president conveyed this order at a limited meeting with Danantara boss Rosan Roeslani and Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian, on Tuesday afternoon, June 10, 2025.
"In his RPJMN, the President set a target that waste should be resolved by 2029. All strategies have been devised through several approaches." Hanif said at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta after the meeting.
Hanif revealed that Prabowo ordered the active involvement of local governments in waste management. The approaches mentioned include upstream schemes such as Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (3R) Waste Processing Sites and Integrated Waste Processing Sites, as well as downstream approaches such as Waste to Energy (WTE) and Refuse-derived Fuel (RDF).
Prabowo also instructed his staff to accelerate cooperation with local governments as the responsible parties in accordance with Law No. 18 of 2008 concerning Waste Management. "Later, following the President's instructions, the Minister of Home Affairs and I will discuss further steps for resolution," said Hanif.
Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian said the head of state highlighted environmental issues, especially waste, as it has become a serious problem in various regions. The government has identified 33 Final Disposal Sites (TPA) that are the focus of waste-to-energy conversion. "This will be converted into energy through a process called waste-to-energy. Danantara will play a role later," said Tito.
Meanwhile, Danantara CEO Rosan Roeslani, also the Investment Minister, stated that they are ready to invest in waste-to-energy projects in the region. He ensured that the project would still consider the established criteria. Rosan also mentioned that Danantara will not be working alone on the project.
"We will also invite the private sector to invest alongside Danantara in this waste-to-energy project," said Rosan.
