TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto officiated the launch of renewable energy projects across 15 provinces on Thursday, June 26, 2025. The former Defense Minister underlined that transitioning to clean energy is essential for achieving national independence.
"The independence of a nation is determined by its ability to provide food for its people and ensure a decent life and livelihood. And in this context, energy plays a crucial role for life in the 21st century and beyond," said Prabowo in a video conference from Bali.
Ijen Geothermal Power Plant: A First for East Java
One of the major projects inaugurated was the Ijen Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) located in Bondowoso, East Java. This facility is the first geothermal power plant in the province.
It began with an initial capacity of 35 megawatts (MW) and is targeted to expand to 110 MW. The total investment for the project amounts to Rp3.9 trillion.
The Ijen PLTP is projected to provide clean electricity to around 85,000 households while helping to prevent up to 7 million tons of carbon emissions throughout its operational period.
The plant features environmentally friendly technology, using a two-phase binary system and ensuring 100 percent reinjection of geothermal fluids.
Geothermal and Solar Projects Nationwide
Beyond the Ijen facility, the government also launched a mix of geothermal and solar power projects—eight geothermal (PLTP) and 47 solar (PLTS) plants. Three geothermal plants are already commercially operational: Ijen PLTP in East Java, Sorik Marapidi PLTP in North Sumatra, and Salak Binary PLTP in West Java.
Five additional geothermal projects are set to begin construction this year: Ulubelu PLTP in Lampung, Muara Laboh PLTP in West Sumatra, and Salak, Wayang Windu, and Patuha PLTPs in West Java.
Together, the eight PLTPs are expected to generate 351.9 megawatts (MW) of electricity, supported by a total investment of Rp23.49 trillion. This capacity is sufficient to power around 390,000 households.
The geothermal projects are also contributing to job creation, employing 8,167 local workers, including 191 residents from Bondowoso who are involved in the Ijen project.
East Bali PLTS and 46 More in the Pipeline
Of the 47 solar projects, PLTS Bali Timur is already in operation, while the remaining facilities are slated for construction throughout the year in various provinces. Collectively, they will contribute 27.8 MW to the national energy grid, reinforcing Indonesia’s commitment to renewable energy.
President Prabowo emphasized the projects as a tangible demonstration of the country’s ability to harness and manage renewable resources independently.
"With these projects, fortunately there are still many other large projects that we have to and will carry out. This is an effort to make our nation energy self-sufficient," he said.
