South Korea Welcomes Danantara's Interest in K-Pop Industry Development

1 day ago 5

TEMPO.CO, JakartaSouth Korea has expressed its welcome to the Daya Anagata Nusantara Investment Management Agency (Danantara Indonesia), which is interested in collaborating on the development of the media and entertainment industry, specifically Korean Pop (K-Pop) and Korean Drama (K-Drama).

Park Soo-Deok, the Charge d'Affaires of the South Korean Embassy to Indonesia, conveyed this statement in response to Pandu Sjahrir, Chief Investment Officer (CIO) of Danantara Indonesia. Sjahrir had conveyed Danantara's intention to study how the South Korean media and entertainment industry continues to thrive and achieve global fame.

"It is interesting that the CIO of Danantara mentioned the potential for cooperation in the media and entertainment sector. I think this is a great potential for cooperation between Indonesia and Korea, considering that many Indonesians like Korean dramas and K-pop," Park told reporters at the Korea-Indonesia Economic Partnership Forum in Jakarta on Tuesday, as reported by Antara.

Park highlighted Indonesia's potential as a market for media and entertainment consumption due to its large population. He suggested that collaboration between the two countries could extend beyond creating the "K-Wave" (Korean Wave) to also developing an "I-Wave" (Indonesian Wave).

The diplomat emphasized that Indonesia is a crucial country for South Korea, not only economically but also politically.

Furthermore, he noted that Indonesia is the only country in Southeast Asia that shares a special strategic partnership with South Korea, and South Korea stands as the seventh-largest investor in Indonesia.

"Many Korean citizens and Korean business people are very interested in investing in Indonesia and having a close partnership. Our task is to encourage exchanges between business people for the mutual benefit of both countries," he stated.

Park further mentioned that South Korean President Lee Jae-Myung had invited Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to visit South Korea when the country hosts the APEC Summit in October 2024. President Lee extended this invitation during his first telephone conversation with President Prabowo on Monday, June 23.

According to him, the two leaders discussed various topics aimed at fostering closer relations between their nations. Several strategic sectors were addressed, including renewable energy, the development of electric vehicles and battery cell production in Indonesia, waste processing, and investments in the health sector.

Prabowo and Lee Jae-myung also discussed the uncertain global situation, touching on military conflicts in the Middle East and tariff policies imposed by the U.S. government on other countries.
