TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto expressed his intention to purchase Boeing aircraft, predominantly the Boeing 777 type, from the United States for PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) Tbk. He made this statement after obtaining an agreement to reduce import tariffs from 32 percent to 19 percent by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Prabowo stated that there was nothing wrong with the purchase of aircraft for the national airline. "I don't think there is a problem because we need it, and they want to sell. Boeing aircraft is also quite good. So, it finally became a meeting of two interests," he said when met at the Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base, East Jakarta, on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
Prabowo revealed that Garuda Indonesia is a source of pride for Indonesia. According to him, importing dozens of aircraft fleets is necessary to develop PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero). Prabowo explained that the airline was born during the independence war and has become a symbol of Indonesia. "I am determined to enlarge Garuda, and for that, we need new aircraft," he said.
"So, Garuda must be a symbol of Indonesia. We are determined, I am determined to enlarge Garuda," said Prabowo. Prabowo was known to have just returned from a working visit to several countries on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
For Prabowo, Garuda Indonesia needs new aircraft to support its operations. Additionally, Prabowo considers Boeing to be a high-quality aircraft manufacturer. "And I think, there is no problem because we need it, and they want to sell. Boeing aircraft is also quite good," he said.
Boeing 777 Specification Details
According to Pima and Space Museum, the Boeing 777 is the world's largest twin-engine long-haul aircraft. The Boeing 777 has a capacity of 314 to 396 passengers, two flight crew, and up to thirteen flight attendants. The Boeing 777 is the first commercial aircraft designed with computer-aided design tools.
The wingspan of the Boeing 777 is 199 feet 11 inches with a body length of 209 feet 1 inch. Meanwhile, the Boeing 777 has a height of about 60 feet 9 inches, enabling the aircraft to reach a maximum speed of up to 587 miles per hour with a range of 5,240 miles. The Boeing 777 is equipped with two high-bypass turbofan engines, each with a thrust of 93,400 pounds.
As of 2018, a total of 1,988 Boeing 777s had been ordered by airlines scattered across the globe. With this number, the Boeing 777 surpassed the previous generation Boeing 747 and became the most successful twin-engine long-haul aircraft ever.
