UGM Nuclear Engineering Student Named Youngest Speaker at ICARO-4 International Forum

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Noor Fahima Wardaningrum, a student of the Nuclear Engineering Program at Gadjah Mada University (UGM), achieved a remarkable feat on the international stage by being selected as the youngest speaker to represent Indonesia at the International Conference on Advanced Radiation Oncology (ICARO-4).

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) held the prestigious international radiation oncology conference in Vienna, Austria, from June 2-5.

ICARO-4 is a world-class scientific forum that brings together healthcare professionals, scientists, and medical physicists from various countries. The conference will discuss the latest advances in radiation therapy technology and the challenges of implementing it in different regions.

This year, ICARO-4 was attended by representatives from 114 IAEA member countries, with a primary focus on promoting improved access to quality cancer services through innovative radiation therapy technology.

During the Special Paper Discussion session held on the first day of the conference, Noor Fahima presented her research titled "Urgency of Implementing Gamification in Microdosimetry Education for Proton Therapy in the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics at Gadjah Mada University." This research is the result of her collaboration with two fellow students, Marchelino Chrisrichy Cosmo Hutama and Hanif Riadi.

"This research was conducted to evaluate the urgency of implementing gamification in microdosimetry education for nuclear engineering students at UGM's Nuclear Engineering Program, specifically in the medical physics concentration, to enhance the capabilities of future medical physicists in Indonesia in studying proton therapy," said Noor Fahima Wardaningrum while presenting her findings to the delegates, as quoted from the UGM website.

Noor's presentation at this international forum received warm acclaim and widespread appreciation from the participants. Dr. Hany Ammar, a medical physics consultant from the Children's Cancer Hospital in Egypt, was one of the people who praised Noor's performance.

"A very good and interesting presentation. It's rare for such a young undergraduate student to present like this. You should be proud," he said.

Similar appreciation was also expressed by Prof. Manjit Dosanjh, a medical physics expert from the University of Oxford, UK, who stated, "Your presentation was very good and inspirational. It's delightful to see the learning enthusiasm of the younger generation."

Not only from Europe and the Middle East, praise also came from representatives of other countries such as Qatar, India, Australia, Nigeria, Malaysia, and Canada. Support from within the country was also voiced by Dr. Angela Giselvania, an oncology radiation specialist from Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) in Jakarta, who expressed her pride in the achievement of the UGM student. "Still an undergraduate student, but able to be selected as a verbal speaker at an international forum. This is extraordinary," she said.
