TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The commemoration of Indonesia's 80th Independence Day on August 17 this year will be held in Jakarta, instead of the new capital city in East Kalimantan. The chair of the Golkar Party, Bahlil Lahadalia, said the ceremony will not be held in Nusantara Capital City (IKN) due to the ill-equipped facilities.
"Transportation, accommodation, and facilities are limited (in IKN)," he said at the Sultan Hotel, Jakarta on Wednesday, July 23, 2025.
The government reflected on the 79th Independence Day ceremony in IKN last year, he said, deeming the facilities inadequate. Bahlil said the facilities and infrastructure in the city must first be well-prepared before hosting state events.
Bahlil also said where this year's ceremony is taking place needn't be questioned. "Don't overthink it. The authority regarding the Independence Day ceremony belongs to the government," said the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources.
Prabowo's decision on Indonesian Independence Day, Bahlil said, must not be linked to other matters, such as his commitment to IKN's construction. "After all, this is President Prabowo's first year," he said.
President Prabowo's decision to hold the 80th Indonesian Independence Day ceremony at the State Palace in Jakarta was also announced by Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka. He said that the ceremony will not be held at IKN as it is still under construction.
The government's decision to centralize the Independence Day celebration in Jakarta is also backed by Deputy Chair of House Commission II, Dede Yusuf, who said the government seeks efficiency.
Considering the cost to travel thousands of people to IKN if the commemoration would take place there, Dede said, Independence Day celebration in IKN "would not be efficient."
The Democratic Party politician also requested the government to issue new regulations regarding the implementation of the Independence Day celebration in Jakarta, as the law states that the commemoration must be held in the capital city.
