Trump Announces 19% Tariff on Philippines in New Trade Deal

7 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Donald Trump announced that an agreement on tariffs has been reached with the Philippines, with the U.S. imposing 19 percent tariffs on Philippine goods entering the country. On the contrary, U.S. goods entering the Philippines will pay zero tariffs.

Trump announced the new agreement on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, on his social media platform, Truth Social. The deal was reached shortly after his meeting with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at the White House.

"We concluded our Trade Deal, whereby The Philippines is going OPEN MARKET with the United States," said Trump on the Truth Social platform, as quoted from Al Jazeera.

The new rate is lower than the initial charge threatened by Trump earlier this month at 20 percent, but above the 17 percent set in April. At that time, Trump announced reciprocal tariffs for dozens of countries, including the Philippines.

The Philippines' tariff rate matches that of Indonesia and is lower than the Vietnam charge. The U.S. had a deficit of nearly US$5 billion with the Philippines last year on bilateral trade amounting to US$23.5 billion.

Marcos is the first Southeast Asian leader to meet with Trump during his second term in office. Marcos told reporters that the U.S. is the Philippines' strongest, closest, and most reliable ally.

Trump stated that the U.S. and the Philippines will also strike a military deal, but no further details are announced.

Philippine Assistant Secretary of Foreign Affairs Raquel Solano said last week that government officials had been collaborating with U.S. partners to reach mutually beneficial agreements.

Protesters gathered near the White House when Marcos arrived. They demanded that Marcos respond to the requests of Filipino Americans and migrant workers amid U.S. immigration crackdowns.

In addition to the Philippines, Trump has also imposed import tariffs for Japan, set at 15 percent. According to Trump, in return, Japan will invest US$550 billion in the U.S.

"This Deal will create Hundreds of Thousands of Jobs — There has never been anything like it. Perhaps most importantly, Japan will open their Country to Trade including Cars and Trucks, Rice and certain other Agricultural Products, and other things," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
