The relationship between U.S. President Donald Trump, and Tesla's founder, Elon Musk, is tense, attracting attention from Russia.
Russian parliament member Dmitry Novikov suggested political asylum in Russia for billionaire Elon Musk amid the escalating tension. "I think Musk is playing a completely different game and he won’t be needing any political asylum. If he did [need political asylum], of course, Russia could offer it," said Novikov, who is also the first deputy chair of the State Duma's International Affairs Committee, quoted from The Moscow Times, on Friday, June 6, 2025.
Criticism from Elon Musk
Tension began to escalate when Elon Musk criticized the tax cut policies and spending bill proposed by Trump. Despite actively expressing his opposition to the bill, Trump did not respond.
Musk argued that the bill could potentially increase the national debt to $36.2 trillion. On Thursday, June 5, 2025, Trump finally made a statement to reporters in the Oval Office expressing his disappointment with Musk's stance. "I'm very disappointed, because Elon knew the inner workings of this bill better than almost anybody sitting here, better than you people," said Trump.
Budget Impact Projection
Elon Musk believes that the proposed bill would increase the already high national budget deficit to $2.5 trillion. He stated that this condition would burden the American people with what he deemed unsustainable debt. According to him, the policies being discussed in Congress would lead the country towards bankruptcy.
Musk's view aligns with the analysis released by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) and several independent experts. Analysts estimated that the proposed Trump administration bill aimed at extending tax cuts implemented since 2017 could potentially increase the national deficit by $2.3 trillion to $5 trillion over a ten-year period.
The bill also includes additional budget allocations for strengthening border security and the military. The Republicans hope that the additional budget can be offset through spending cuts in other sectors, such as Medicaid programs, food stamp assistance, and tax incentives for green energy.
White House
Trump stated that he has the authority to cancel government contracts worth billions of dollars currently held by Elon Musk's companies. The White House refuted claims that the proposed bill would worsen the national budget deficit. They argued that the projection is not entirely accurate, as it does not yet consider the potential economic growth as a result of the tax cut policies.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said that Trump understands Elon Musk's position regarding the bill and is aware of the objections that have been raised. "It doesn't change the president's opinion. This is one big, beautiful bill, and he's sticking to it," she said.
Communication Cut Off
On Friday, June 6, 2025, Trump stated that he has no intention of speaking to Elon Musk following their public feud. "No, I don't have any plans." This statement was made by Trump to reporters on Friday night when he was asked if he planned to contact Musk, who had been his advisor.
"I’m not thinking about Elon. You know, I just wish him well," he said. He also affirmed that he currently has no desire to reconcile or mend the relationship with the Tesla CEO.
Trump Wants to Sell Tesla Car
Trump is considering selling or giving away his Tesla car. He bought this car earlier in the year as a show of support for Elon Musk. The consideration to sell the Tesla car came after the rupture in their relationship.
Quoted from a report by Financial Express, on Sunday, June 8, 2025, the bright red Tesla worth $80,000 was still parked in the White House grounds on Friday morning. The White House has confirmed that Trump is seriously considering getting rid of the vehicle.
