TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian rock climber Veddriq Leonardo is gearing up for the World Games 2025, which will take place in Chengdu, China, from August 7 to 17. He noted that his training has entered its final phase, focusing now on fine-tuning physical condition and acclimatizing to the competition venue.
For this 12th edition of the World Games, Indonesia is dispatching eight rock climbers to compete in the speed category. Veddriq is one of four male climbers representing the nation, alongside Alfian Muhammad Fajri, Kiromal Katibin, and Raharjati Nursamsa. The four female climbers representing Indonesia in this event are Desak Made Rita Kusuma Dewi, Rajiah Sallsabillah, Puja Lestari, and Amanda Narda Mutia.
"We are scheduled to depart for the World Games in the second week of this month. So, preparation is proceeding as usual; it's now about optimizing adjustments there, regarding nutrition, training, and rest. Indonesia's target is certainly the gold medal," Veddriq told Antara in Jakarta on Monday, August 4, 2025.
The World Games is an international multi-sport event held quadrennially, showcasing non-Olympic sports. Nevertheless, it is noteworthy that rock climbing officially made its Olympic debut at the Paris 2024 Games, including the speed category, which is a recognized strength for Indonesia.
Prior to the World Games, the Indonesian rock climbing team participated in several IFSC World Cup 2025 series events. At the Chamonix series in France on July 12, Desak Made Rita secured a silver medal with a time of 6.46 seconds. The week prior, Desak achieved an even more impressive feat, clinching a gold medal with a time of 6.27 seconds in the Krakow series, Poland.
In the men's category, Raharjati Nursamsa claimed gold after triumphing over his compatriot Kiromal Katibin in a thrilling final. Raharjati clocked 4.73 seconds, while Kiromal had to settle for silver after an unfortunate fall.
The International World Games Association (IWGA) has designated 34 sports with 60 disciplines to be contested at the World Games 2025. Chengdu will make history as the third city in Asia to host the World Games since its inception in 1981, following previous events in Akita (Japan, 2001) and Kaohsiung (Taiwan, 2009).
