TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Italy is one of the popular vacation destinations for many tourists. However, many people are still unfamiliar with the etiquette of exploring the home country of pizza. Elizabeth Heath, a writer who has lived in Italy for over 15 years, offers valuable advice for tourists: dress neatly.
According to her, Italy is known for its fashion, design, style, taste, and traditions. Therefore, dressing appropriately in Italy is a way to show respect and politeness. "Not just for yourself, but to the people you’ll encounter and the places you’ll visit," said the editor of Travel+Leisure.
Of course, tourists are also expected to behave politely, respectfully, and patiently. But that does not mean you have to buy designer clothes for a trip to Italy. It is recommended to leave loose items at home. Heath shares some fashion items that should not be worn when visiting Italy.
1. Flip-flops
Flip-flops can certainly be used if you're going to the beach. However, don't wear flip-flops when dining in a restaurant. "Avoid flip-flops because the people dining at the table next to you don’t want to see the bottoms of your grubby feet," she said.
2. Sports pants
This type of pants might be comfortable for long flights, but most Italians do not wear basketball shorts or sports pants, not even to the supermarket, let alone to the museum.
3. Baseball cap
A cap can avoid the scorching sun. If you must wear it, remove it and store it out of sight whenever you are indoors, especially in restaurants and churches.
4. Loud T-shirts and shorts
T-shirts with university logos or favorite sports teams are considered too casual for daily wear. It is better to choose plain-colored polo shirts. Additionally, while miniskirts, knee-length shorts, and low-cut tank tops may be appropriate for evening walks, they are too revealing for daytime wear, particularly when visiting churches with dress code regulations.
Heath added that there are no strict dress codes when visiting Italy. But dress as if you're going to have lunch. "For men or women, that simply means looking pulled together, with clean, neat, wrinkle free clothing, structured shoes, and nothing on your body that resembles pajamas or slippers," she said.
If you dress like the Italians, you will blend in a little and appear to care about your appearance. It's a polite way to present yourself.
