TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning for high waves for the next three days, from August 4 to 7, 2025. The early warning includes waves that can reach up to 6 meters in height.
BMKG forecaster Ryan Putra Pambudi said the winds in the northern part of Indonesia over the next three days will move down south, at 4 to 25 knots. Meanwhile, in the southern part of Indonesia, the winds move southwest at speeds of 6-30 knots.
"Strongest winds observed in the Indian Ocean west of Lampung to the Indian Ocean south of Banten and the Arafura Sea," Ryan said in a written statement today, Monday, August 4, 2025.
This condition, he said, may cause high waves of 1.25-2.50 meters in several regions, including the Banda Sea, Arafura Sea, Java Sea, Bali Sea, Flores Sea, Makassar Strait, Seram Sea, Sumbawa Sea, and Karimata Strait.
Several other waters may experience even higher waves. For instance, the Indian Ocean south of Nusa Tenggara, the Indian Ocean west of Bengkulu, the Mentawai Islands, the Nias Islands, Aceh, and the northern part of the Malacca Strait, may see 2.5-4.0 meter waves.
Very high waves, ranging from 4 to 6 meters, may occur in the Indian Ocean south of Java and Bali, as well as the Indian Ocean west of Lampung. "The high waves potential in these waters could pose a risk to maritime safety," Ryan stated.
The risk potential could affect fishing vessels, ferries, cargo ships, and even cruise ships. Coastal communities are urged to stay vigilant.
