Brazil's Lula Proposes UN Meeting to Trump to End Global Conflicts

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva proposed an extraordinary UN Security Council meeting to seek diplomatic solutions to the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Iran during a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump, according to a statement released by the Brazilian Presidential Office on Friday, August 21.

"I expressed regret over the UN Security Council's inability to act and ... proposed convening an emergency meeting of this body to seek diplomatic ways out of the current crises," the statement read.

The two leaders exchanged views on pressing global conflicts, focusing particularly on Ukraine and the Middle East. They also concurred on the necessity of finding a compromise solution to resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

During the exchange, President Lula conveyed to Trump that Washington's tariff policies against Brazil were entirely groundless.

After noting that the tariffs negatively affect both Brazil and the U.S., he stated that continuing negotiations remains the best path forward for both countries.

In mid-July, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Trump had directed the U.S. Trade Representative to impose 25 percent tariffs on most Brazilian imports, claiming President Lula was unwilling to negotiate "in good faith."
