Census Says Many Indonesians Named After Sasuke, Nobita

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Director General of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil) at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Teguh Setyabudi, revealed that census data shows numerous Indonesian citizens bearing the names of Japanese anime characters and world-famous artists. Teguh shared these census findings during the Dukcapil Coordination Meeting and the Release of Temporary Population Data I for 2026 in Jakarta on Monday, August 3, 2026.

"There are people named Nobita, Uzumaki, Sasuke, and Naruto," Teguh said, as broadcast on the Ministry of Home Affairs's Dukcapil YouTube channel.

According to official records, Uzumaki leads as the most popular anime-inspired name in Indonesia, held by 190 residents. Nobita follows in second place with 181 individuals. Sasuke ranks next with 158 people, while Naruto accounts for 157 names.

In addition to anime figures, several international celebrity names appear across the population database. For instance, the name of Canadian singer Justin Bieber, for example, is used by 18,551 residents. The names of American singers such as Ariana Grande are recorded as being used by 15,281 people, while Taylor Swift is used by 153 people. "There are also 142,000 people named Olivia Rodrigo," said Teguh.

Teguh reported that Indonesia's total population has now reached 290,125,073 people. Generation Z individuals born under the Cancer zodiac sign currently make up the largest demographic segment. Additionally, the census database includes 129,439 individuals born on February 29 during leap years, an occurrence that takes place only once every four years.

Teguh further highlighted that Nurhayati remains the most common female first name across the country. Putri stands out as the most widely used surname, whereas Sulastri takes the top spot in Java.

During the meeting, Teguh also reported that 3,639,244 birth certificates were issued throughout the first semester of 2026. He then urged the public to maintain civic discipline and stressed the crucial need to register newborn children.

"With a birth certificate, a child will receive a KIA (child identity card). Their data will include a NIK (population identification number), and with this NIK, they will receive better access to public services and support," Teguh said.
