TEMPO.CO, Jakarta China aims to increase the share of electricity generated from non-fossil energy sources to 50 percent by 2030, according to the country's newly released national plan for power sector development for the 2026-2030 period.

As ANTARA reported, the five-year plan, released by China's National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration, lays out a comprehensive roadmap for the country's power sector for the 2026-2030 period and targets the initial establishment of a new power system by 2030.

Under the plan, China aims to integrate more than 2.8 billion kilowatts of new energy capacity into the power grid and build a charging infrastructure network capable of supporting more than 110 million electric vehicles by 2030.

To achieve these targets, the plan outlines a series of priorities, including expanding green and low-carbon electricity supply, building a more coordinated and resilient electricity grid, increasing electricity system flexibility, enhancing electricity supply resilience, advancing market-oriented electricity sector reforms, and fostering international cooperation.

The plan calls for balancing renewable energy development with grid integration and scientifically advancing conventional hydropower projects.

In addition, the plan also encourages the safe and regulated development of nuclear power, supports the diversification of non-fossil energy sources, and improves the carbon efficiency and performance of coal-fired power plants.

By 2030, China plans to increase its installed capacity of conventional hydropower to about 410 million kilowatts, its nuclear power capacity to about 110 million kilowatts, and its total installed capacity of biomass, solar, geothermal, and ocean energy to about 65 million kilowatts.

Previous official data showed that coal-fired power plants accounted for 49.7 percent of China's total electricity output in the first half of 2026, marking the first time the share has fallen below 50 percent and marking a new milestone in the country's transition to a green and low-carbon energy system.

China is committed to peaking carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality before 2060.
