TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - World football governing body FIFA is reportedly set to investigate the pitch disturbance that broke out after the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday, July 19.
FIFA has appointed a disciplinary and ethics inspector to investigate the incident following Spain's victory over Argentina, Reuters reported on Tuesday.
The altercation erupted after Argentine midfielder Leandro Paredes violently confronted Spanish players Eric Garcia and Gavi.
The confrontation sparked a wider brawl between both squads, resulting in heavy pushing and shoving that required physical separation, with Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni even stepping in to restrain his players.
In addition to Reuters, British outlet Sky Sports reported that FIFA will look into the disturbance, which led to referee Slavko Vincic showing Paredes a red card after the final whistle.
During the match, Spain dominated from the opening minute, keeping defending champions Argentina firmly on the back foot.
After remaining goalless through 90 minutes, the match moved into extra time, with Ferran Torres striking the winning goal in the 106th minute.
Spain held onto their 1-0 advantage until the end of the match, securing La Roja's second World Cup title in history.
