Forest fire hotspots in the Blok Bantengan area are seen from Teletubbies Hill in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS), East Java.

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -  A forest and land fire at Mount Bromo in East Java, Indonesia, remains unextinguished, with the affected area expanding to an estimated 10 hectares as joint firefighting teams continue efforts to contain the blaze using limited manual equipment.

"Based on reports from personnel in the field, several hotspots remain active today, so officers are continuing firefighting efforts in several locations," Oemar Sjarief, Head of the Probolinggo Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), said on Wednesday.

Firefighting Efforts Continue Despite Limited Equipment

Personnel from the Probolinggo BPBD Rapid Response Team, East Java BPBD, state forestry company Perhutani, the Indonesian Military (TNI), National Police (Polri), the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) authority, disaster response agencies, volunteers, and local residents have joined forces to extinguish the fire in the Mount Bromo tourism area.

Sjarief said firefighters' traditional fire beaters, locally known as kepyok, had been damaged after extensive use during firefighting operations.

"All of the fire beaters owned by personnel have been damaged due to intensive use in extinguishing the forest fire. However, officers are continuing to fight the blaze using available tree branches," he said.

In addition to manual tools, teams are using backpack sprayers to suppress the flames, which have continued spreading due to strong winds and dry grass that is highly flammable.

Tourism Access Partially Closed

Firefighters are also monitoring hotspot movements and creating firebreaks to prevent the flames from spreading to other areas, with the aim of containing the fire and preventing further expansion of the affected area.

The burned area in Mount Bromo, which is part of the TNBTS conservation zone, has increased from 7.9 hectares to 10 hectares. Authorities warned that the figure could rise as some hotspots remain active.

The wildfire has affected tourism activities at Mount Bromo, one of East Java's most popular destinations. The TNBTS authority has temporarily closed several access routes to support firefighting operations and ensure visitor safety.

The affected entrances include Jemplang and Coban Trisula in Malang Regency and Senduro in Lumajang Regency. The closures have been in effect since Monday, August 3, at 10 p.m. Jakarta time (WIB), with no reopening date announced.

Visitors can still access Mount Bromo through the Cemoro Lawang entrance in Probolinggo and the Wonokitri entrance in Pasuruan, although access remains limited.
