Gaza Health System Faces Severe Crisis Amid Medicine and Ambulance Shortages

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Health officials in Gaza warned on Saturday, July 11, of a severe health crisis in the enclave, with critical shortages of medicines, equipment and ambulance services threatening the lives of hundreds of thousands of patients.

Mohammed Abu Afash, director of the Medical Relief Organization in Gaza, said the health system has not received the promised medical aid convoys since the ceasefire. According to ANTARA, this has led to critical shortages of medicine and equipment. The deficit of medical test kits exceeds 87 percent.

He said that more than 24,000 patients with chronic conditions were not receiving adequate care, and many of the more than 300,000 hypertension patients had experienced serious complications due to interrupted treatment.

With summer temperatures rising, he warned of the rapid spread of infectious diseases in densely populated refugee camps.

Meanwhile, Gaza's health authorities said in a statement that 70 percent of the ambulance fleet was inoperable due to targeted attacks, engine damage, and a shortage of spare parts. They also warned that a continued ban on the entry of tires and spare parts could paralyze the transportation system.

The worsening situation drew criticism from Fatah official Munther al-Hayek, who in a radio interview described the situation as a "full-scale war led by the United States through Israel."

The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has been in effect since October 10, 2025.
