TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) has detected the movement of Tropical Cyclone 94W near the Philippine Sea, warning of potential extreme weather, including heavy rain and high waves in Indonesian waters from August 3 to 6, 2026.
BMKG Acting Director of Maritime Meteorology Agie Wandala Putra said the atmospheric system has affected national wind patterns, with wind speeds reaching up to 28 knots.
“The presence of Tropical Cyclone 94W east of the Philippines has directly contributed to the formation of convergence zones and the accumulation of moist air masses in several areas,” Agie said in Jakarta on Monday, August 3, 2026.
The cyclone precursor was detected at 15.3 degrees north latitude and 124.7 degrees east longitude. It was moving west-northwest with maximum wind speeds of 25 knots and atmospheric pressure of 1,006 hectopascals (hPa).
The activity of Tropical Cyclone 94W has triggered the formation of confluence and convergence zones stretching from the coast of Aceh to Kalimantan, western Java, Sulawesi, and Papua.
The weather system could bring moderate to very heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of hydrometeorological disasters in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.
In addition to increased rainfall, BMKG warned of potential high waves reaching 2.5 to 4 meters in northern parts of the Malacca Strait, the western Indian Ocean off Sumatra, and the southern Indian Ocean off Java.
Meanwhile, moderate waves between 1.25 and 2.5 meters could occur in waters including the Java Sea, Makassar Strait, Banda Sea, and Arafura Sea.
BMKG urged all maritime transportation users, particularly fishermen and ferry operators, to monitor the latest weather updates before sailing to reduce safety risks.
Residents living in coastal areas as well as flood- and landslide-prone regions were also advised to remain alert during the development of the cyclone system.
“People living and carrying out activities along coastal areas with potential high waves are advised to remain vigilant,” Agie said.
