TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Indonesia and the European Union discussed regulatory developments and readiness for implementing mandatory halal certification, which is set to take effect in Indonesia in October 2026.

Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency (BPJPH) said in an official statement on Tuesday, citing ANTARA, that this is a step to strengthen communication with international partners to ensure the implementation of the Halal Product Assurance (JPH) policy in Indonesia is fully understood by global stakeholders.

"We hope this meeting can serve as a forum for us to exchange information and discuss various policies in the implementation of Halal Product Assurance," said E.A. Chuzaemi Abidin, Deputy for Halal Product Assurance Fostering and Supervision at BPJPH.

BPJPH met with the EU delegation in Jakarta last week. They included representatives from embassies and trade institutions from Finland, Germany, Austria, France, Hungary, Poland, Spain, Belgium, and Denmark.

Chuzaemi said the meeting was part of BPJPH's efforts to establish a shared understanding of the halal product assurance policy and provide international trading partners with information and certainty ahead of Indonesia's implementation of the Halal Mandatory Policy.

He emphasized that BPJPH hopes all stakeholders will have the same understanding of the regulations and mechanisms for implementing halal product assurance in Indonesia through intensive communication.

"BPJPH is openly committed to providing comprehensive explanations to the various questions raised to avoid misunderstandings regarding the implementation of halal policies in Indonesia," he said.

Meanwhile, Head of Trade and Economic Section of the European Union Delegation, Carsten Sorensen, explained that the visit aimed to obtain the latest information on regulations and policies in Indonesia as part of the business world's preparation for the implementation of mandatory halal certification.

"The regulatory update is intended to prepare the industry and related sectors to welcome the mandatory halal product guarantees stipulated in Indonesian regulations," said Sorensen.

He believes that having a clear understanding of halal regulations is crucial for businesses and industries in European Union countries that trade with Indonesia.
