Indonesia Opens Oscar Submission Process for 2027 Academy Awards

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Indonesian Oscar Selection Committee (IOSC) has opened submissions for Indonesian films seeking to represent the country in the International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards, with entries due by 5:00 p.m. WIB on August 31, 2026.

The selection process is overseen by the IOSC under the Indonesian Film Companies Association (PPFI).

According to a PPFI press release issued on Saturday, eligible films must have been screened in a commercial cinema in Indonesia for at least seven consecutive days between October 1, 2025, and September 30, 2026.

Films must also have received a standard theatrical release supported by promotional and distribution activities in line with common industry practices.

The 99th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on March 14, 2027, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

Eligibility Requirements

The International Feature Film category, formerly known as Best Foreign Language Film, honors feature-length films produced outside the United States.

According to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, eligible films must have a running time of more than 40 minutes and may be fiction, animation, or documentary features.

To qualify, more than 50 percent of a film's dialogue must be in a language other than English.

Each country is permitted to submit only one film annually through its official selection committee, making the national selection process the sole pathway to Oscar consideration in the category.
