TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia's Traffic Corps (Indonesian National Police Traffic Corps) has begun using facial recognition technology in its Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (ETLE) system to identify traffic violators, even if they use fake license plates or drive without vehicle registration plates.
Brig. Gen. I Made Agus Prasatya, Director of Law Enforcement at the Traffic Corps, said on Wednesday that the initiative was introduced under the direction of Traffic Corps chief Insp. Gen. Wibowo.
According to Traffic Corps data, ETLE cameras recorded 16,812 license plate-related violations during the first half of 2026, including motorists driving without license plates or using fake ones. Motorcyclists accounted for 77.24 percent of the violations.
Agus said the facial recognition system enables ETLE cameras to identify drivers by matching their faces with population records maintained by Indonesia's Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration.
The technology allows authorities to verify a driver's identity even when a vehicle is fitted with a fake license plate, has its plate covered, or has no plate at all.
Beyond improving the accuracy of traffic law enforcement, the system is also expected to assist police in investigating crimes committed on public roads and ensure that traffic violation notices are delivered to the correct individual.
Agus said the Traffic Corps will continue deploying Highway Patrol (PJR) officers and law enforcement personnel to areas with high numbers of traffic violations, while prioritizing technology-based enforcement through ETLE alongside a more humane policing approach.
"We are not proud of issuing penalties. Law enforcement is our last resort," Agus said. "Our priority is to encourage public compliance through the ETLE system and the use of technology so that road safety, order, and legal certainty can be achieved."
