TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Aquatics has announced a 14-swimmer squad for the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan, aiming to end a 36-year medal drought.
According to the list released by the board, monitored by ANTARA in Jakarta on Tuesday, the team comprises nine men and five women athletes.
Experienced swimmers such as I Gede Siman Sudartawa, Masniari Wolf, Farrel Armandio Tangkas, Joe Aditya Wijaya Kurniawan, and Flairene Candrea Wonomiharjo are returning to the squad.
They will be joined by a group of young swimmers, including Jason Donovan Yusuf, Arya Adrean Putra Haryono, Kevin Erlangga Prayitno, Samuel Maxson Septionus, Liquor Harison Handoko, Made Aubrey Jaya, Adelia Chantika Aulia, Adellia, and Nadia Aisha Nurazmi.
Jason and Masniari head into the games carrying momentum from their gold medal wins at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand. Jason secured two gold medals in the men's 50m and 100m backstroke events, while Masniari won the women's 50m backstroke.
At the same event, Farrel contributed two silver medals and Joe won one silver, while Siman, Flairene, Adelia Chantika, and Adellia contributed bronze medals.
In total, the Indonesian swimming team amassed three gold, three silver, and five bronze medals at the 2025 SEA Games.
The 2026 Asian Games offer an opportunity for Indonesian swimming to improve upon its performance at the previous edition in Hangzhou, China, where the team did not win any medals.
The best individual result was achieved by Farrel, who finished sixth in the men's 200m backstroke final with a time of 2 minutes 2.40 seconds. Muhammad Dwiky Raharjo finished eighth in the men's 50m breaststroke final with a time of 28.52 seconds, while the mixed 4x100m medley relay team also finished eighth in their final.
Indonesian swimming last reached the Asian Games podium at the 1990 Beijing Games, securing three bronze medals through Richard Sam Bera (men's 100m freestyle), Wirmandi Sugriat (men's 200m breaststroke), and the women's 4x100m freestyle relay team (Khim Tjia Fei, Meitri Widya Pangestika, Yen Yen Gunawan, and Elfira Rosa Nasution).
The swimming events for the 2026 Asian Games are scheduled to take place from September 20 to 25 at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre in Tokyo.
Meanwhile, the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games will run from September 19 to October 4.
Indonesian Aquatics has also appointed four coaches to accompany the squad; they are Albert Christiadi Sutanto, Arif Purbo Warsono, Billy Arfianto, and Hendry Suryaatmadja Sutanto.
