TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Secretary of the National Central Bureau of Interpol Indonesia issued a red notice against Sheikh Ahmad Al Misry, a suspect in an alleged sexual assault case who is currently a fugitive. According to the official Interpol website, his name is listed as Ahmad Abdelwakil Elsayed Mohamed Ahmed, born on January 1, 1987 (39), in Kalyubiya, Egypt, and is now an Indonesian citizen.
Interpol also listed his physical characteristics, including a black beard. "Charges: criminal acts of indecent assault and physical sexual abuse," reads the Interpol website, quoted on Monday, August 3, 2026.
Brigadier General Untung Widyatmoko, Head of the National Police's International Relations Division, stated that the red notice was issued last month. "The person concerned received an Interpol Red Notice on July 9, 2026, with the number A/10808/7-2026," Untung said when contacted on Monday. Untung also confirmed that Misry remains in Egypt.
Previously, officers from the Indonesian National Police's International Relations Division revealed that Misry was attempting to renounce his Indonesian citizenship. This information was obtained after the police communicated with the Indonesian Embassy in Cairo.
"The Indonesian Embassy in Cairo has officially communicated with me regarding efforts to relinquish SAM's Indonesian citizenship," Untung said in his statement on Wednesday, May 14, 2026.
The red notice was issued against Misry at the request of the National Police's International Relations Division. Misry previously obtained Indonesian citizen status through naturalization after marrying an Indonesian woman.
Misry is a suspect in the alleged sexual assault of several Islamic boarding school students. Five victims have filed reports with the Indonesian National Police Criminal Investigation Agency regarding alleged sexual assault by Misry. The sexual assault reports were filed with Bareskrim Polri by another preacher, Mahdi Alatas, in late November 2025.
However, the victim's companion, Abdurrohman Al Athos, revealed that there were more than five victims, all of whom were men. Misry himself is known in Indonesia as a Middle Eastern preacher.
The case was reportedly revealed in 2021. However, preachers and several religious figures in Indonesia attempted to resolve the matter through tabayyun (interrogation). Finally, when it was discovered that the person in question was still engaging in similar behavior, a police report was filed on November 28, 2025.
Misry was reported for violating Article 415 in conjunction with 417 of the Criminal Code or KUHP and Article 6 letter b, Law Number 12 of 2022 concerning Criminal Acts of Sexual Violence.
On Wednesday, April 22, 2026, Sheikh Ahmad Al Misry denied allegations of sexual violence against several Islamic boarding school students. "The allegations of harassment against Islamic boarding school students are untrue," Ahmad Al Misry said in a short video received by Tempo from his attorney, Cholidin.
Al Misry stated that he had complied with the police summons. The questioning was conducted online because he had been in Egypt since March 15, 2026, to accompany his mother, who was undergoing treatment there.
Al Misry claimed that during questioning, he acted as a witness, not a suspect. He stated that he had sent several pieces of evidence to the police through his attorney. "In Islam, we are taught not to easily spread any news we hear without first verifying its veracity," he said.
