TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran had been preparing to launch attacks on three points in Ukraine, in response to Kyiv's alleged attack on Iranian ships in the Caspian Sea. However, they failed to carry out the attacks after Kyiv offered an apology.
In an interview with Iranian national television on Monday, citing ANTARA, the military adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Mohsen Rezari said that the Iranian military had completed preparations for the attack before the operation was halted.
Rezaei also warned that Iran would not allow navigation through the Strait of Hormuz via unrecognized routes. He threatened to target ships attempting to sail via "illegal routes."
On the same occasion, he emphasized that Iran had managed to inflict heavy losses on United States troops in the latest 17-day conflict. Iran's missile and drone attacks also thwarted U.S. attacks in the region, Rezaei added.
The statement came after Iran accused Ukraine of attacking an Iranian merchant ship in the Caspian Sea on July 25, resulting in the death of one crew member. Following the incident, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha that Kyiv must pay compensation to Tehran for the damage caused by the attack.
The escalation of tensions in the Middle East occurred after the U.S. and Israel launched attacks on Iran last February, triggering Tehran's retaliatory attacks on several neighboring countries in the region.
Then, in April, the U.S. and Iran agreed to a ceasefire, which was followed by the signing of a peace memorandum last June. The memorandum was reached through Pakistani mediation and aimed to end the military conflict and establish a peace agreement.
However, the agreement was never implemented, and the two countries attacked each other for two weeks.
