TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Regent of West Lombok, Lalu Ahmad Zaini, was seen attending a public viewing event of the 2026 World Cup final with local residents before the Indonesian Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) arrested him in a sting operation on Monday, July 20, 2026. Videos showing Zaini at Giri Menang Park, Lombok Barat, circulated on social media. During the event, he appeared accompanied by the Regional Secretary of Lombok Barat, Akhmad Saikhu, and mingled with the crowd to watch the match.
KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo did not explain Zaini's presence at the event. He only confirmed that KPK officers arrested Zaini in the morning at his official residence. "One thing for sure, the regent was apprehended in the morning at his official residence," said Budi at the KPK HQ, Jakarta, on Monday, July 20, 2026.
According to Budi, the case is related to alleged acceptance of benefits related to projects within the Lombok Barat Regency government. However, the KPK has not disclosed the details of the case nor the roles of the individuals apprehended.
"This case is suspected to be related to the benefits received by the regent in connection with projects within West Lombok Regency," said Budi.
In the sting operation, KPK officers arrested 19 individuals. After undergoing initial questioning at the Mobile Brigade Headquarters in Lombok Barat, the officers took seven individuals, including Lalu Ahmad Zaini, to the KPK HQ for further interrogation.
In addition to the arrests, the officers seized cash in Rupiah and several documents as evidence. The KPK team also sealed the workspace of the Regent of Lombok Barat and the office of the Head of the Department of Public Works, Spatial Planning, and Settlement Area Management (PUPRPKP) of Lombok Barat for investigative purposes.
According to the Criminal Procedure Code, the KPK has a maximum of 1 x 24 hours to determine the legal status of the individuals arrested in the sting operation. As of Monday night, the anti-corruption agency has not announced the details of the case nor the individuals to be designated as suspects.
