TEMPO.CO, JakartaThailand and Cambodia have initiated technical talks to settle the border dispute in Malaysia from Monday, August 4 to Wednesday, August 6, 2025. This initial meeting is part of the series leading up to the General Border Committee (GBC) session scheduled to take place on Thursday, August 7, 2025, in Kuala Lumpur.

As reported by Nation Thailand, Ad Hoc Centre members for the Thailand-Cambodia Border Situation, Jirayu, mentioned that the secretariat-level meeting did not involve observers from a third party. However, at the official GBC meeting on August 7, representatives from Malaysia, the United States, and China will be present as observers.

Jirayu also conveyed that Thailand's Deputy Minister of Defense, General Nattaphon Narkphanit, will lead the Thai delegation in the official meeting once the technical meeting concludes.

According to Jirayu, the situation along the Thailand-Cambodia border area was normal until Monday morning. There were no reports of violence in the seven Thai border provinces. He stated that the security forces remained present and operated according to the designated plans to maintain Thailand's sovereignty and ensure public safety.

The initially planned GBC meeting in Phnom Penh was eventually relocated to Kuala Lumpur at Thailand's request. Malaysia was chosen as a neutral location, and the meeting duration was from one day to four days.

Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Malaysian Defense Minister, led a trilateral video conference with his counterparts from Thailand and Cambodia to finalize the preparations. Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister General Tea Seiha and Thai Defense Minister General Natthaphon Narkphanit attended the virtual meeting.

In his statement quoted from The Sun Malaysia, Mohamed Khaled stated that the meeting was an important step in preparing for the Thailand-Cambodia GBC session scheduled for August 7 in Kuala Lumpur.

"In the spirit of ASEAN, Malaysia is fully committed to supporting an ASEAN-led peaceful resolution process," he said.

He added, "These discussions reflect the commitment of all parties to peaceful negotiation and constructive dialogue. We hope it will contribute to our shared responsibility to preserve peace and stability in the ASEAN region."

The GBC discussions are a follow-up to the ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia, signed in Malaysia on July 28, 2025. The GBC serves as an official forum for resolving border disputes through diplomatic channels, thereby avoiding the potential for new tensions in the field.
