TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The European Union is modernizing the Schengen visa by moving to fully digitalizing the entire application process. All applications will eventually be done online without paperwork.
The digital Schengen visa is expected to be thoroughly implemented in all EU member countries by 2028.
This change means that the Schengen visa will no longer use stickers but secure and encrypted 2D digital barcodes. This change aims to enhance security, expedite processing times, and make the procedure more technologically advanced.
Tested during the 2024 Paris Olympics
The digital Schengen visa has been tested during the 2024 Paris Olympics in France. During that time, 70,000 digital Schengen visas equipped with barcodes were issued as part of the trial phase.
Travelers scan the barcode—linked to the centralized European Union visa system—upon arriving at the border. This allows immigration officers to access travelers' personal data and important visa information.
The digital Schengen visa will provide a fully digital experience for travelers once launched. Users can upload documents, track application status, and pay visa fees online. After completing these steps, they will receive a digitally signed barcode visa, as reported by Business Today.
However, for travelers visiting Europe for the first time, biometric data must be submitted in person. The process will be much easier for subsequent visits.
Pan-European Visa
Amid the push for modernizing the Schengen visa, European countries such as Greece, Italy, and France are advocating for a pan-European tourist visa. This visa aims to simplify travel across the continent by creating a flexible single option.
Reports indicate that this proposed visa would reduce bureaucratic barriers for travelers and potentially encompass both Schengen and non-Schengen countries in the European Union. However, this proposal has yet to be greenlit by the European Union, and its implementation will require extensive legal and political coordination.
