Prabowo: Indonesia-Thailand Ties Shape Southeast Asia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto emphasized that ties between Indonesia and Thailand are crucial, as both nations are founding members of ASEAN and wield significant influence over regional dynamics in Southeast Asia.

"Our relationship greatly influences the situation in Southeast Asia," Prabowo said during a joint press statement with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Monday, August 3.

According to Prabowo, the Thai Prime Minister's visit carries significance given that both nations share a foundational legacy within ASEAN. Prabowo noted that Indonesia and Thailand also stand as two of the region's major economic powerhouses. "We also possess large economies," Prabowo said.

Therefore, the President expressed conviction that the two nations' status as ASEAN founders, combined with their economic clout, gives their bilateral relationship an impact on Southeast Asia.

Prabowo also highlighted that Anutin's official visit marks the first by a sitting Thai Prime Minister in 15 years.

The President noted that the meeting served as the second Leaders' Consultation between Indonesia and Thailand since the two countries elevated their bilateral ties to a strategic partnership last year. "This demonstrates that the partnership between Indonesia and Thailand continues to grow and is future-oriented," Prabowo said.

Throughout their talks, Prabowo and Anutin addressed a wide array of bilateral, regional, and international issues, including joint efforts to reinforce ASEAN's central role amid heightened global uncertainty.

As founding members of ASEAN, Prabowo stated, both Indonesia and Thailand share a joint responsibility to maintain regional peace, stability, and security while fostering shared prosperity.
