Prabowo Pushes for More Indonesia-Thailand Meetings

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is pushing for more frequent meetings and closer coordination between Indonesia and Thailand to bolster the two nations' strategic partnership.

"Perhaps because we are so close and have no real problems, we tend to take everything for granted. And we think, 'Oh, that was just yesterday,' but I think maybe we should meet and coordinate more often," President Prabowo said while hosting Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul during an official visit at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Monday.

In his welcoming address, Prabowo described PM Anutin's visit to Indonesia as highly historic, marking the first official visit by a Thai head of government in years.

"Prime Minister, your visit today is indeed historic and very important. This is the first official visit by a Thai Prime Minister to Indonesia in 15 years," the President said.

Prabowo emphasized that the bilateral partnership between Indonesia and Thailand must remain forward-looking and centered on delivering tangible benefits for citizens of both nations.

"If Thailand and Indonesia collaborate closely, it will contribute to a stronger and more stable ASEAN," Prabowo said.

To realize this vision, the President proposed deepening defense and security cooperation through more frequent and advanced joint military exercises, alongside expanding educational exchange programs for military officers.

Furthermore, he encouraged both nations to expand economic opportunities across trade, investment, food security, energy, and digital technology, while also deepening cultural and social ties between their peoples.

Before opening the formal talks, President Prabowo offered his heartfelt condolences on behalf of himself and the Indonesian people to the Royal Family and citizens of Thailand over the passing of Princess Bajrakitiyabha, while also extending birthday wishes to King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua.

President Prabowo also recalled his longstanding connection with Thailand and the Thai King, referencing their shared military background as young officer peers.
