Prabowo's 6 Steps to Indonesia's Energy Independence

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya outlined President Prabowo Subianto’s six steps toward national energy self-sufficiency through the optimization of domestic resources.

"President Prabowo Subianto stressed the urgency of achieving energy self-sufficiency and reducing our reliance on foreign energy supplies," Teddy noted in a written statement released in Jakarta on Friday.

The Cabinet Secretary conveyed the President's directive that national energy independence must be built from Indonesia's own strengths and resources.

President Prabowo previously chaired a National Energy Council (DEN) meeting with several cabinet ministers and DEN members at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Thursday, September 17.

According to Teddy, the meeting was a routine DEN agenda, led directly by President Prabowo as DEN Chair, to map out concrete measures for accelerating national energy independence.

Citing Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia, who serves as DEN daily chair, Teddy said the first step is to accelerate the development of various domestic energy sources, including palm oil, corn, cassava, sugarcane, coal, geothermal, and solar energy.

The second step focuses on advancing B50 and E50 biofuel blends to curb reliance on imported fuel. Additionally, the government aims to bolster renewable capacity by accelerating solar power plant deployment to 100 gigawatt peak (GWp) within three years.

Furthermore, officials are moving to raise national oil production by optimizing existing fields and active wells while stepping up exploration activities to expand domestic output.

The government is also weighing follow-up measures regarding the planned construction of a nuclear power plant, aligning with preliminary studies and structured phases to reinforce the national energy mix.

As a further step, the government will draft a comprehensive and measurable energy roadmap. This roadmap will outline annual targets, funding requirements, execution timelines, and a clear division of operational responsibilities.

"The President emphasized that energy independence is not only about meeting domestic energy needs, but also plays a crucial role in strengthening economic resilience and providing greater space for Indonesia to determine its development direction amidst global geopolitical dynamics," Teddy stated.
