Prabowo Says South Korea Asked Him to Help Open Talks with North Korea

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said South Korea’s president asked him to help initiate dialogue with North Korea, as Seoul seeks Jakarta’s support in easing tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

Prabowo revealed the request during a meeting with the central and regional chambers of commerce and industry (Kadin) at the State Palace in Jakarta on Friday.

"South Korea’s president asked me, could I visit North Korea to open some kind of dialogue," Prabowo said.

He said the request was made during his state visit to South Korea. Prabowo added that he was willing to travel to North Korea if he received an official request to carry out the mission.

"I said, with respect and willingness, if I am asked to go to North Korea, I will go," he said.

Prabowo said South Korea’s request reflected its trust in Indonesia’s foreign policy approach, which emphasizes independence and neutrality in international affairs.

He said Indonesia’s position allows it to engage with countries that have different interests because Jakarta is seen as having no intention of interfering in other nations’ domestic affairs.

"Indonesia is considered a country that does not seek to interfere in the internal affairs of any country. That is the principle we firmly maintain," Prabowo said.

He also pointed to Indonesia’s involvement in addressing the Myanmar crisis as an example of its ability to communicate with different parties involved in a conflict.

Prabowo said Indonesia would continue maintaining its non-aligned foreign policy and avoid joining military blocs or alliances.

The president added that Indonesia would continue seeking diplomatic solutions and improving relations with neighboring countries.

"I am trying to improve relations with all our neighbors, pursue reconciliation, and offer approaches [for dialogue]," he said.
