TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Senior advisor to Donald Trump, Stephen Miller, accused India of financing Russia's war in Ukraine through large-scale oil purchases from Moscow. As reported by The Indian Express, he made the statement in an interview on the Sunday Morning Futures program of Fox News on Sunday, August 3, 2025.
Miller criticized India's energy policy, describing its oil purchases from Moscow as indirectly bolstering Russian aggression in Ukraine. He also viewed this criticism as a serious concern for a country that has been referred to as the United States' key partner in the Indo-Pacific region.
Earlier, Trump announced a 25 percent tariff on Indian products entering the United States. In addition, Trump also threatened countries purchasing oil from Russia with a 100 percent import tariff, unless Moscow reached a peaceful agreement with Ukraine.
In a separate report, as cited by Anadolu, Miller stated that India is now on par with China in terms of energy imports from Russia. He referred to Trump's statement about India as a close friend of America being inconsistent with the actual situation on the ground.
"People will be shocked to learn that India is basically tied with China in purchasing Russian oil," said Miller.
He also emphasized that all options are open for the United States to address the Ukraine war, whether diplomatically, economically, or otherwise.
"So now we're in a position of economic strength to deal with Russia and to deal with this war," he said.
Miller also mentioned India's high tariffs on American products and immigration policies, which he claimed are detrimental to American workers.
"All options are on the table to deal diplomatically, financially, and otherwise with the ongoing war in Ukraine," he said.
He stated that Trump wants an extraordinary relationship with India, but emphasizes the need for a realistic stance in addressing India's role in financing Russia's war.
