UK Heatwave Ends as Thunderstorms Raise Flash Flood Risk

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Kingdom (UK)'s latest heatwave is expected to ease over the coming days as cooler temperatures, thunderstorms, and gusty winds sweep across parts of the country. However, forecasters warn the respite could be short-lived, with another period of extreme heat already emerging in longer-range forecasts.

The changing weather comes after another record-breaking day in what has become one of the hottest summers in modern British history. Temperatures reached 30 degrees Celsius or higher for the 34th day of the year, matching the previous annual record set in 1995. Meteorologists expect that record to be surpassed as early as next week if another heatwave develops.

As reported by The Independent, heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast to affect parts of Northern Ireland, Scotland, western England, and Wales, bringing the risk of flash flooding in areas where prolonged dry conditions have left the ground hardened and unable to absorb rainfall efficiently.

The UK Met Office has warned that some locations could receive up to 30 millimeters of rain within an hour, accompanied by hail and damaging winds. In parts of north-east Scotland, isolated thunderstorms could deliver as much as 50 millimeters of rainfall over several hours, increasing the risk of localized flooding and transport disruption.

The unsettled conditions mark a sharp contrast to recent weeks, when large parts of England and Wales experienced their driest July since records began. Southern England recorded its driest July on record, while widespread drought conditions affected much of England and Wales.

The prolonged heat has also intensified pressure on public services. Amber heat-health alerts remain in effect for several regions, including London, South East England, East Midlands, and East of England, with health authorities warning that vulnerable people could face increased health risks and greater demand for medical care.

The hot, dry weather has also fueled a series of major wildfires. Firefighters have continued tackling large blazes in Suffolk and South Wales, where hundreds of hectares of forest, scrubland, and vegetation have been burned.

According to BBC News, strengthening westerly winds are expected to push humid air away from the country, allowing temperatures to return closer to seasonal averages. By Thursday, most parts of the UK are forecast to record daytime temperatures between 15C and 24C, offering more comfortable conditions after weeks of oppressive heat.

The drop in humidity is expected to improve overnight conditions as well, making homes cooler and easing sleeping conditions that had become increasingly difficult during the recent heatwaves.

Despite the temporary cooldown, meteorologists believe another hot spell may not be far away. Some forecast models indicate that high-pressure systems and southerly winds could return later next week, potentially pushing temperatures above 30C once again, particularly across south-east England.

While forecasters caution that conditions remain uncertain this far in advance, they say another official heatwave cannot be ruled out.

The prolonged period of exceptional heat has already rewritten parts of Britain's climate record. Earlier this summer, the UK experienced multiple heatwaves across May, June, and July, with temperatures repeatedly exceeding historical averages. The extreme weather has been linked to thousands of excess deaths, severe drought, increased wildfire activity, and mounting pressure on agriculture, prompting farming organizations to call for urgent measures to strengthen long-term water security.
