TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Yevheniia Shynkarenko, the Interim Chargé d'affaires of the Ukrainian Embassy in Jakarta, highlighted the man-made famine that devastated Ukraine in 1932-1933, a tragedy orchestrated by the Moscow government, during an exclusive interview in Jakarta on June 10, 2025.
Shynkarenko explained that the famine was the direct result of an intentional policy where all food commodities produced in Ukraine were confiscated and withheld from the public.
"The Moscow government created a man-made famine in Ukraine by hoarding all the food that was grown, and this situation was completely concealed from the international community," Shynkarenko stated.
The Ukrainian diplomat recommended the British film Mr. Jones which accurately depicts the man-made famine tragedy, despite not being a documentary.
This presentation of history was made to shed light on the oppression experienced by the Ukrainian people under the Soviet Union and the Russian Empire during which Ukrainian culture and language were actively banned and suppressed.
Shynkarenko emphasized the importance of the world understanding this dark chapter of history to provide a more comprehensive background to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
She further stressed that Ukraine views Indonesia as a crucial partner expected to play a significant role in efforts to end the conflict. "That is why we ask all our partners, all friendly countries, including Indonesia, to press the Russian Federation to stop these killings," Shynkarenko urged.
A ceasefire, she underlined, is a crucial first step towards achieving genuine security. However, she believes Russia has not demonstrated a sincere intention to end the conflict. "We see that the Russian Federation does not show real intentions," she remarked.
According to Shynkarenko, achieving security in Ukraine is not solely in her country's interest but will also benefit global stability. "The only way to achieve security in Ukraine, which will benefit the whole world, is to stop aggression throughout the region," she asserted.
This appeal for support underscores Indonesia's vital role as an influential country in the Southeast Asian region in diplomatic efforts to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which has been ongoing since February 2022.
