West Java Police Allow Public to Fight Off Street Robbers

7 hours ago 4

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta West Java Police Chief Inspector General Pipit Rismanto has called on both law enforcement and the public to take firm action against street robbers, or locally known as begal. The directive comes in response to a rising wave of robberies across the province.

West Java Regional Police Head of Public Relations Sr. Comr. Hendra Rochmawan emphasized that any response must remain firm yet measured.

"The regional chief's directive mandates firm and measured action. This applies not only to the police, but also to the public, provided it is firm and measured. It should not lead to fatal consequences," Hendra said when contacted on Tuesday, July 21, 2026.

Hendra clarified that the technical parameters explicitly forbid inflicting permanent disability or death. For citizens, he added, the guideline serves as an appeal to defend themselves against robbers while waiting for law enforcement to arrive.

The warning follows a surge in robbery incidents across several cities in West Java. In response, several precinct police stations across the region have stepped up large-scale patrols through enhanced routine operations.
