X Can Now Notify Users When Governments Restrict Their Posts

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The social media platform X will now notify users when their posts are restricted (shadowbanned) due to government requests or legal requirements in a specific country.

According to TechCrunch, X announced the update as an expansion of its "Under the Hood" transparency feature. This feature provides information about moderation decisions related to user accounts and posts.

As quoted by ANTARA, this update allows users to find out if their posts are being downranked or restricted due to government content restrictions.

Previously, users could not directly see if X had labeled or reduced the visibility of their accounts or posts. This often gave rise to accusations that the platform was shadowbanning certain accounts.

X first introduced the "Under the Hood" feature last August. With this feature, users who have posted at least ten times in one month can download their account's aggregated statistics in JSON format.

Now, the information provided by the "Under the Hood" feature also includes reach restrictions implemented by X to comply with national laws. The downloaded file will indicate which uploads are restricted in a given country due to government requests and the countries that submitted those requests.

Government requests for content restrictions can be based on various rules, ranging from regulations concerning hate speech and terrorism-related content to election laws.

X said the update is part of the company's efforts to increase transparency about how the platform moderates content and determines its reach.

This move follows several other transparency efforts by X, such as opening up the source code for the "For You" algorithm that determines which posts appear on users' main timelines.
