TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Several posts claiming that the dengue fever vaccine contains artificial intelligence technology and tiny chips have circulated on Facebook via account 1 [archive] and account 2. These posts proliferated after Indonesia launched the world's first mRNA-based dengue vaccine prototype on July 8, 2026.

The accounts claimed that the mRNA-based vaccine candidate contained nanobots, microchips, 5G or 6G devices, and Internet of Things technology. These components were alleged to alter human DNA. The posts urged the public to avoid hospitals and turn to herbal remedies instead.

Is it true that the mRNA dengue vaccine candidate contains artificial intelligence (AI) and chips capable of altering human DNA?

Tempo’s fact checking team verified the claim through expert interviews and searches of credible sources. The findings indicate that the mRNA-based dengue vaccine candidate contains no microchips and does not alter human DNA. Artificial intelligence technology is utilized during the research process, not as an ingredient in the vaccine itself.

The development of the mRNA-based dengue vaccine is a collaboration between the University of Indonesia and Tsinghua University. The lead researcher from the University of Indonesia, Prof. Dra. Beti Ernawati Dewi, stated that this tetravalent vaccine incorporates four antigen components derived from the four dengue virus serotypes found in Indonesia: DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4.

Beti explained that the research was designed because dengue fever remains a national health threat. "The vision is to build national self-reliance in facing dengue," Beti said in a written message to Tempo on Tuesday, August 18, 2026.

Citing Antara, the Ministry of Health recorded 39,672 cases of dengue fever with 105 deaths up to May 2026. Throughout 2025, the number of cases reached 131,393, with 544 deaths.

mRNA Vaccines Do Not Contain AI or Chips

Beti Ernawati Dewi emphasized that artificial intelligence (AI) technology is used solely as a research tool to map viral mutations and design formulas. "Artificial intelligence is not an ingredient injected into the body," Beti stated.

Researchers feed data into the AI system, including the virus's genetic structure, locations where it was found, and immune response characteristics. The AI system then analyzes patterns of viral changes to serve as a reference for updating antigens.

Virologist Arif Nur Muhammad Ansori from Airlangga University added that mRNA vaccines do not contain nanobots, microchips, or electronic devices. The protective component for the mRNA utilizes lipid nanoparticles—which are purely fat particles—rather than electronic nanobot devices.

mRNA Vaccines Do Not Alter Human DNA

In general, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), vaccines contain ingredients such as antigens, preservatives, stabilizers, surfactants, diluents, and adjuvants.

Antigens are components that trigger an immune response. In conventional vaccine technologies, antigens could be small parts of the disease-causing organism—such as proteins or sugars—or the entire organism in a weakened or inactivated form.

In contrast, mRNA-based vaccines use genetic material (DNA or RNA) that instructs the body to produce specific antigens.

According to Beti Ernawati Dewi, mRNA vaccines do not use live dengue viruses capable of causing infection. Conceptually, the mRNA carries temporary genetic information that enables cells to produce dengue antigens, thereby stimulating the immune system. Beti explained that mRNA is not designed to alter human DNA. Once injected into the body, mRNA operates outside the cell nucleus to provide instructions for producing antigens—substances that trigger the human immune system.

After performing its function, the mRNA molecule naturally degrades. "mRNA vaccines are not designed to remain permanently in the body," she said.
