Here Are The Most Anticipated Films at Cannes Film Festival 2025

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -The 2025 Cannes Film Festival, running from May 13 to 24 in France, remains a major draw for cinephiles, critics, and awards watchers alike.

This year, 23 films are vying for the Palme d'Or in the main competition, while many more will screen across sections like Un Certain Regard, Directors' Fortnight, and Cannes Premiere.

Even before the festival’s red carpet rolls out, a few titles have already generated serious buzz. Here are three of the most awaited:

Die, My Love

Scottish filmmaker Lynne Ramsay returns after eight years with Die, My Love, a psychological thriller delving into postpartum depression—a theme rarely explored in mainstream cinema.

The film boasts a powerhouse cast including Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Pattinson, LaKeith Stanfield, Nick Nolte, and Sissy Spacek. According to Vanity Fair, it’s already seen as a strong Palme d’Or contender.

Nouvelle Vague

Boyhood and Before trilogy director Richard Linklater turns his lens to 1960s France in Nouvelle Vague, a tribute to the French New Wave.

Centered on the making of Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless, the film stars Zoey Deutch as Jean Seberg and features a mostly French cast. It promises both nostalgia and a philosophical touch—hallmarks of Linklater’s storytelling.

Alpha

Palme d'Or winner Julia Ducournau returns with Alpha, a mystery-shrouded entry in this year’s lineup. Known for Titane and her visceral, body-centric storytelling, Ducournau's latest has already been labeled one of Cannes’ most provocative offerings.

Other Titles to Watch

Also competing are major names like Wes Anderson (The Phoenician Scheme), Ari Aster (Eddington), and Jafar Panahi (It Was Just an Accident).

Outside the main competition, Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut The Chronology of Water and Scarlett Johansson’s Eleanor the Great are turning heads in Un Certain Regard.

Big-budget fare like Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning will screen out of competition, highlighting the festival’s wide-ranging appeal.
