Iran Launches Attack on U.S. Military Base in Qatar

TEMPO.CO, Teheran - Iran attacked U.S. forces stationed at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar on Monday, June 23, 2025, following Tehran's declaration that it would retaliate against a prior U.S. strike on its nuclear sites.

Tehran Declares Victory 

The Iranian news agency Tasnim, quoting Al Jazeera, reported that officials from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed the attack on the U.S. military base, referring to the Operation Annunciation of Victory.

Tehran described the incident as a "powerful and devastating missile attack" on the Al-Udeid U.S. military base in Qatar."

CNBC reported that explosions were heard in the skies above Doha, Qatar's capital. Al Udeid Air Base, located near Doha, is the largest U.S. military installation in the Middle East, housing approximately 10,000 military personnel.

In response to the attack, sounds were observed above Doha, initially unidentified as part of air defense or missile systems. Residents reported extremely loud and jolting explosions.

Qatar Reports No Casualties

However, the Qatari Ministry of Defense stated that its Air Force successfully intercepted the missile attack on Al Udeid, with no reports of deaths or injuries. NBC News reported that U.S. forces were preparing to counter an imminent Iranian attack at locations in Iraq and Bahrain.

Previously, on early Sunday, June 22, 2025, the U.S. Air Force and Navy attacked Iran's nuclear facilities. Coordinated with U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), these strikes targeted three nuclear sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.

Prior to Iran's retaliatory attack, the U.S. and UK embassies had issued advisories for their citizens in Qatar to seek protective shelters until further notice. The Qatari government also announced the temporary closure of its airspace to ensure the safety of its residents and visitors.

Beyond Qatar, U.S. forces are present in several other Middle Eastern countries, including Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia. These nations serve as crucial centers for air and sea operations, regional logistics, intelligence gathering, and power projection.

Established in 1996, Al Udeid Air Base covers approximately 24 hectares and accommodates nearly 100 aircraft, including unmanned aerial vehicles. The base is home to 10,000 troops, serves as the headquarters for U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), and functions as an operations center for activities in Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan.
