Jurgen Klopp Set to Take Over as Germany's New Head Coach

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Former Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp is expected to be officially unveiled as Germany's new head coach on Friday, after the German Football Federation (DFB) scheduled a press conference at its headquarters in Frankfurt, according to ESPN.

While the DFB's announcement did not mention Klopp by name, multiple German media outlets reported that the former Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund manager has agreed to take charge of the national team through the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The federation is expected to finalize the appointment during an online executive meeting shortly before Friday's presentation.

Klopp has emerged as Germany's preferred candidate since Julian Nagelsmann resigned following the team's shock round-of-32 elimination to Paraguay at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The defeat marked Germany's third consecutive early exit from a major international tournament.

Klopp Returns to Coaching

Klopp has not managed a team since leaving Liverpool in 2024, citing fatigue after nearly nine years at Anfield. Over the past 18 months, he has served as Red Bull's Head of Global Soccer, overseeing the company's network of clubs, including RB Leipzig and the New York Red Bulls.

Talks between Klopp and the DFB accelerated during the World Cup in the United States, where Klopp worked as a television pundit. The federation said earlier this month that both sides had reached agreement on the "essential key points" of a contract, with the final hurdle being Red Bull's approval.

According to German newspaper Bild, as cited by Yahoo! Sports, Red Bull's foundation will receive compensation of around US$1.14 million, though the DFB has not commented on the report.

Klopp recently said he felt "recharged" and ready to return to coaching.

Germany Eyes Fresh Start

Klopp inherits a Germany side seeking to rebuild after years of disappointing tournament performances. His first match in charge is expected to come on September 24, when Germany face the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League.

One of the most successful managers of his generation, Klopp guided Borussia Dortmund to back-to-back Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012 before winning the UEFA Champions League with Liverpool in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020.

German football has broadly welcomed his expected appointment. Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer described Klopp as "absolutely the right man" to lead the national team, while former Germany midfielder Matthias Sammer praised his leadership and tactical identity.

"He has a clear playing idea with and without the ball. He has aura and authority," Sammer told Die Zeit, cited by Yahoo! Sports.

German media also reported that former international Sven Bender is expected to join Klopp's coaching staff alongside longtime assistants Peter Krawietz and Pepijn Lijnders.
