TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The death toll from catastrophic flash floods along the Nepal-China border reached 160 on Wednesday, August 26, with hundreds more unaccounted for, police and local tourism officials confirmed.

Nepalese authorities reported that among the 384 people still missing, 290 are foreign tourists hailing from India, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The Bhotekoshi River in Nepal's mountainous Rasuwa district abruptly burst its banks, spawning a furious deluge that swept away homes, infrastructure, and a hydroelectric power station.

What triggered the massive inundation remains unclear, according to local news reports.

Meanwhile, local media outlets reported that at least five Japanese nationals are among those missing in the tragedy.

An official at the Japanese Embassy in Kathmandu disclosed that diplomatic staff have been unable to reach the five citizens, who were believed to be traveling on a sightseeing tour when the deluge struck.

Embassy officials have requested assistance from local authorities to trace the missing tourists.

Across the border, China's state-run Xinhua news agency reported three fatalities and 265 people missing after a massive mudslide tore through Shigatse, a major hub in the Tibet Autonomous Region.

The swollen river originates in China before carving its path south into Nepal.
