TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sony has filed a lawsuit against Tencent over the alleged copyright infringement of the game Light of Motiram, which is suspected of imitating the Horizon game series. Light of Motiram is a new game released by Tencent. Sony accuses the game of copying almost all elements from its Horizon game.
According to a report from The Verge on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, Light of Motiram was announced last year with previews that were deemed similar to the Horizon franchise. This includes giant robot animals and even title fonts that resemble the Horizon game.
Sony's Complaint
Sony stated that illegally copying the protected audiovisual elements of the game Horizon and adopting similar character trademarks constitutes copyright and trademark violations. According to the lawsuit, Tencent began developing Light of Motiram in 2023. In March 2024, at the Game Developer Conference, Tencent reportedly submitted a proposal to Sony. The proposal requested that Sony grant Tencent's subsidiary, Aurora Studios, a license to develop a sequel to Horizon. Sony rejected the proposal.
Even after the offer was declined, Tencent launched Light of Motiram, which featured many elements similar to the original proposal and visual elements similar to those of the Horizon franchise. Sony accuses Tencent of wanting to develop a version of Horizon in collaboration with SIE by proposing a mobile game project with elements such as survival, skills, animal taming, and multiplayer game modes.
According to the Steam page, the developer and publisher of Light of Motiram is Polaris Quest. Sony stated in the lawsuit, as quoted by Engadget, based on information and belief, Tencent Shanghai conducts business under the name Aurora Studios and/or Polaris Quest.
Sony has engaged in discussions with Tencent in an attempt to informally address its concerns that Light of Motiram violates its intellectual property rights.
Sony accuses Tencent of attempting to license intellectual property from Horizon again. Sony has rejected Light of Motiram's request to license Horizon assets. Sony requested that the court issue a cease-and-desist order to prevent Tencent from continuing to develop or release the game. Sony also demands compensation and requests that all materials related to Light of Motiram be destroyed. As of now, Tencent has not provided an official response.
