Anak Krakatau Eruption Expands Airport Closures to Eight

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Transportation confirmed that the number of airports temporarily closed due to volcanic ash from the Mount Anak Krakatau eruption has risen to eight to guarantee aviation safety and security.

"The eight affected airports include Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Tangerang, Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta, Radin Inten II Airport in Lampung, and Husein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung," Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi confirmed in Jakarta on Sunday.

The remaining airports are Budiarto Airport in Curug, Tangerang; Pondok Cabe Airport in South Tangerang; Taufik Kiemas Airport in Pesisir Barat, Lampung; and Atung Bungsu Airport in Pagar Alam, South Sumatra.

The minister requested that all flight operators prioritize safety in every operational decision and provide information quickly, accurately, and transparently to the public.

Furthermore, Minister Dudy emphasized that despite operational disruptions stemming from natural disasters, passenger service must remain a primary concern.

Airlines were asked to provide clear guidance to passengers regarding schedule changes, flight cancellations, or diversions, and to ensure that passenger rights are fulfilled in accordance with applicable regulations.

He also raised the possibility of flight diversions to alternative airports, such as Kertajati, Semarang, Surabaya, and Yogyakarta.

He asked airlines to inform passengers immediately to prevent prolonged waiting times, given that the timeline for airport closures remains unpredictable.

"Most importantly, airlines must guarantee passenger rights to ticket refunds so people are not left waiting, as many travelers still hope they can fly," Dudy emphasized.

"However, given the current situation, we likely will not be able to reopen these airports anytime soon. We will resume operations once we can guarantee that safety conditions are clear," he added.

The minister also requested that operators deploy staff and maintain active information channels to assist affected passengers, ensuring any travel adjustments are handled in an orderly and coordinated manner.

Minister Dudy further advised travelers using affected facilities to avoid coming to terminals during the suspension period and to monitor the latest updates directly from airlines regarding their flight status.

Earlier, during a virtual press conference in Jakarta on Sunday at around 1:00 p.m. WIB, the minister announced that six airports were temporarily closed due to volcanic ash hazards threatening flight safety.

Initially, the Ministry of Transportation shuttered five airports: Radin Inten II Airport in Lampung, Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Tangerang, Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta, Pondok Cabe Airport in South Tangerang, and Budiarto Airport in Curug, Tangerang.

Following further evaluations at 12:00 p.m. WIB, Husein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung was also declared affected by volcanic ash, leading to the immediate suspension of its flight operations.
