TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong stated that the joint security agreement between Australia and Indonesia—the Jakarta Treaty 2026—is an initiative that will continue to be developed for the benefit of future generations in both nations.

During the Indonesia-Australia "2+2" ministerial meeting involving foreign and defense ministers, Foreign Minister Wong described the Jakarta Treaty 2026 as marking a new level in the bilateral relationship.

"We view the Jakarta Treaty as something we will continue to develop for future generations of Indonesians and Australians," Penny Wong said in Melbourne, Australia, on Wednesday.

She added that Australia fully recognizes that the security, stability, and prosperity of both nations begin within the region, with Indonesia serving as a vital partner.

She emphasized that the meeting needed to be conducted with mutual respect and wisdom, while also taking into account the interests of the next generation.

On the same occasion, Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono advocated for stronger cooperation and ties between Indonesia and Australia during the bilateral 2+2 meeting.

"We are destined to be together. Naturally, this demands greater cooperation and a stronger relationship between Indonesia and Australia," Sugiono said.

On February 6, 2026, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese signed the Indonesia-Australia Treaty on Common Security, known as the Jakarta Treaty 2026.

The treaty strengthens high-level regular consultations and the commitment to mutual support in the face of serious threats.

The agreement also encompasses joint defense training in Indonesia, the posting of senior Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) officers to the Australian Defence Force (ADF), expanded military education exchanges, and a memorandum of understanding regarding investment between Australia and Danantara.
