Indonesian House to Monitor Hotels, Catering for Hajj Pilgrims

11 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal stated that the DPR's Hajj Monitoring Team will directly supervise the quality of hajj pilgrims' services in the Holy Land, ranging from hotel room capacity, catering, to anticipating non-procedural pilgrims. "There are several notes that we may also see in the field. What is certain is that we will be guided by the results of this working committee," Cucun said after seeing off the KJT-24 hajj pilgrims at Kertajati Airport, Majalengka, on Sunday, May 10, 2026, as quoted from the official statement.

Cucun stated that the DPR monitoring team will ensure that all agreements on hajj services, previously discussed in the DPR Working Committee, are truly implemented in the field, especially related to pilgrim accommodations.

"For example, if the placement in hotel rooms that we agreed upon is for four people, why can there be more than four people? Well, this is what we will see later," Cucun said.

According to Cucun, placing pilgrims beyond capacity can only be tolerated if the room conditions are indeed spacious and adequate. However, he cautioned against forcing pilgrims to stay in cramped rooms with excessive occupants. "But if this is forced and the room is cramped with more than four people, it's not good," he said.

In addition to accommodations, the DPR monitoring team is monitoring pilgrim catering services, which are still being complained about. This politician from the National Awakening Party revealed that there are reports of hajj pilgrims being bored with the food menu during their stay in the Holy Land.

"There are reports that the menu might be boring, not necessarily that the quality is lacking. Maybe the menu needs to have a little variety," Cucun said.

This evaluation, according to Cucun, will be discussed together with all stakeholders in organizing the hajj, both the Hajj Service Organizers (PPIH) in Saudi Arabia and in the homeland.

Not only focusing on pilgrim services, Cucun is also spotlighting the handling of non-procedural pilgrims, which he says is now much stricter through cross-ministerial and agency coordination. "Now, when we met with Minister Imipas yesterday, no one can slip through without a hajj visa to Saudi Arabia. Everyone will definitely be selected, screened," the Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives said.

Until now, more than 50 percent of the hajj pilgrims have departed. This year, there are around 221,000 hajj pilgrims leaving.
