Jakarta Keeps Watch on Anak Krakatau Activity and Ash Dispersion

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chico Hakim, Special Staff to the Governor of Jakarta, stated that the Jakarta Provincial Government is continuously monitoring the activity of Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait and the impact of its volcanic ash dispersion on the capital city. Chico urged Jakarta residents to remain calm and vigilant.

"Follow official information from the BMKG, PVMBG, BPBD, and the Provincial Government. Do not easily believe unverified reports. The health and safety of residents are our priority," said Chico Hakim in an official statement on Sunday, September 6, 2026.

According to data from the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), an eruption occurred on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at 07:10 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). The activity was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 50 mm and a duration of 16 seconds. The volcano's status remains at Level III (Alert/Siaga). Potential threats around the crater primarily consist of lava flows, which may be accompanied by the ejection of incandescent rocks. The public and tourists are prohibited from entering a 3-kilometer radius from the center of activity.

Meanwhile, BMKG monitoring recorded eruptive activity at 09:03 WIB, with a maximum amplitude of 19 mm and a duration of approximately 29 seconds. No significant anomalies were detected on BMKG seismograph recordings around the time of the event, and monitoring prior to this showed no significant rise in sea levels.

The volcanic ash dispersion zone was observed to be expanding, reaching Purbalingga Regency in Central Java and parts of the Jakarta area. The Jakarta Provincial Government has advised residents to wear masks when outdoors; limit non-essential outdoor activities; keep doors, windows, and vents closed to prevent ash from entering homes; wear protective eyewear to prevent eye irritation; rinse eyes with clean water rather than rubbing them if exposed to ash; and keep food and drinks covered. Residents are also advised to clean up ash using wet methods rather than dry sweeping and to exercise caution while driving due to reduced visibility and potentially slippery roads. "Seek medical attention immediately if experiencing shortness of breath, severe eye irritation, or other health issues," said Chico.

He also urged the public to monitor official information from the BMKG, PVMBG, BPBD, and local government. Jakarta provides the Siaga 112 service for emergencies. "The Jakarta Provincial Government continues to coordinate with relevant agencies and will provide regular updates on the latest developments," said Chico.
