Jonatan Christie One Win Away From First Indonesia Open Title

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesian badminton star Jonatan Christie reached the Indonesia Open final for the first time in his career after defeating Thailand's Panitchaphon Teeraratsakul in the men's singles semifinals of the BWF World Tour Super 1000 Indonesia Open 2026 at Istora Gelora Bung Karno in Jakarta on Saturday, June 6.

The fifth seed rallied from a game down to secure a 16-21, 21-10, 21-12 victory and move one step closer to claiming his maiden Indonesia Open title.

"This is my first Indonesia Open final. Reaching this stage means a lot because I've been waiting for this opportunity for quite a long time," Jonatan said after the match. "I've kept trying to find the right formula, and perhaps this is finally the year."

The achievement marks a career milestone for the 28-year-old, whose previous best result at the prestigious home tournament was a semifinal appearance in 2021, when he lost to Denmark's Viktor Axelsen.

Jonatan is now one win away from ending Indonesia's long title drought in the men's singles event. The last Indonesian to win the Indonesia Open men's singles crown was Simon Santoso in 2012.

The semifinal was far from straightforward for the world No. 4, who struggled early against Panitchaphon's aggressive attacking game. Jonatan said the shuttlecock conditions were noticeably faster than in previous rounds, a factor that favored the Thai player.

"I am grateful to reach the final after a very demanding match," Jonatan said. "The shuttlecock was much faster today, which suited my opponent's attacking style and powerful smashes."

Panitchaphon capitalized on the conditions in the opening game, repeatedly putting Jonatan under pressure and taking advantage of several unforced errors to claim the first game 21-16.

Jonatan admitted he was slow to adjust.

"In the first game, I didn't anticipate those conditions well enough, and he scored many points because of that. In the second game, I began to adapt to his style of play," he said.

The turning point came when Jonatan changed his approach. Rather than matching Panitchaphon's fast-paced attacks, he opted to extend rallies and force his opponent to work harder for points.

The tactical adjustment paid off immediately. Jonatan dominated the second game 21-10 before maintaining control in the decider. He built an early lead and never looked back, closing out the match 21-12 to secure his place in the final.

Jonatan will face Canada's Victor Lai in Sunday's championship match. Lai booked his spot in the final after upsetting Taiwan's sixth-seeded Chou Tien Chen in a hard-fought three-game semifinal, winning 21-19, 19-21, 21-19.

The final presents Jonatan with a chance to capture his first Indonesia Open title and deliver a long-awaited men's singles triumph for the host nation.
