TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Family, fans, and sports communities across the globe united on Sunday, August 23, to honor late Los Angeles Lakers icon Kobe Bryant on what would have been his 48th birthday.

As reported by The Spun, his widow, Vanessa Bryant, marked the occasion by posting a throwback photograph on Instagram dedicated to her late husband. "Happy birthday, baby. I love you so much. 8/23," she wrote in a caption.

The tribute triggered a wave of remembrances across professional basketball. The Los Angeles Lakers honored their former star across social media platforms with the message, "Icon. Legend. Laker. Happy Birthday, Kobe." Hall of Famer Magic Johnson also joined in the tributes, posting on X, "I want to wish a happy heavenly birthday to Kobe Bryant!"

Former Olympic teammate Dwyane Wade reflected on Bryant's unique drive and magnetic presence during their time together on the court. "I saw things in him that I was like, I have those things, but I also saw a difference. This is why he's as great as he is," Wade said, recalling how he took every opportunity to absorb knowledge from Bryant during the Summer Games.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on August 23, 1978, Bryant spent his entire 20-year NBA career with the Lakers, assembling one of the most decorated resumes in basketball history.

As noted by Bleacher Report, the 18-time All-Star won five NBA championships, two Finals MVP awards, four All-Star Game MVPs, and the 2008 league MVP title. He remains fourth on the NBA's all-time scoring list with 33,643 points, trailing only LeBron James, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Karl Malone. Beyond the court, Bryant earned an Academy Award in 2018 for his animated short film Dear Basketball.

The anniversary of his birth also leads directly into August 24, a date recognized annually by fans as "Mamba Day" in honor of the Nos. 8 and 24 jerseys he wore throughout his career. His core philosophy, widely known as the "Mamba Mentality," continues to be an international benchmark for athletic dedication and resilience.

Kobe Bryant passed away in January 2020 at age 41 in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, which also claimed the lives of his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, and seven others aboard.
